Vertical Highstreet/Housing

Location: London, Lambeth, Central Hill Estate
The proposal for this social housing project was a mid-rise building that consisted of housing and niche shops/spaces integrated within the building. Central Hill estate is at risk of demolition due to the council saying there is not sufficient housing. This proposal aimed to increasing the housing within the estate while taking inspiration from the existing estate.
The notion to incorporate niche spaces within the building derived from Jan Gehl’s principles from highstreets and plazas to replicate the social, friendly and safe atmosphere within the estate. The mid-rise building is linked to the back of an unused police station which is used for work spaces in order to generate revenue back into the community. Having these niche spaces within the building creates job opportunities and allows for the residents to make a living.
